Established Downtown D.F.S.( later known as King Power)
Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha (formerly Raksriaksorn) was raised in a Thai-Chinese family. He was just a common man operating run of the mill tasks. In 1989, he created Downtown D.F.S. (later renamed to King Power), a duty free company dealing in retail activities. The first store was launched at Mahatun Plaza and undertook the task of selling Thai Handicrafts, which was followed with a pickup service at Don Mueang International Airport of Thailand. The firm was small in its stature, but the first private company of its kind that was allowed a retail space at the airport. In the first decade, Vichai had managed to climb the ladder of success and in doing so, he struck the right chord with some of the elites in the country. One such association was with telecom tycoon and former Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, which proved sizeable as King Power was given the right to deal in duty free activities at Suvarnabhumi Airport and four main provincial airports. What was expected to be a smooth ride thereon turned into much of strife, owing to the political crisis in Thailand from 2006-2008. During this period, Vichai dealt with his associations carefully and diverted the situation to maintain his strong foothold in Thailand’s business activities. Vichai diversified his approach in 2010 when he bought a second tier English Football club called Leicester City. His vision to make it a title winning squad was laughed at. This was aggravated with the suffering of defeats in various matches. Nevertheless, he was focused on a turnaround and invested heavily in the team and its infrastructure. In a series of astonishing events, not only did the club qualify for the premier division of English football, but also lifted the crown of the prestigious Barclays Premier League tournament. The success story of Leicester City surprised those who doubted its potential, and compelled them to reinstate their belief in seemingly impossible tasks and achievements
